I knew that the best way to improve my floor plan was to ask you guys. So, the first round of comments (and improvements) is out. If you will notice in the image below, I followed Janice's advice and replaced sink cabinet with a regular shelf cabinet which is giving me the nice tall doors I was looking for. Yay!
2nd comment came from Ginger. She said that the best thing she did for her kitchen was a pull out pantry. Ginger, I hear you! Unfortunately I cannot do this without loosing counter space. I have entrance to the dining room on the left of my fridge with a little partition wall. I realized that I had not included it on my original floor plan, so there you can see it now. What I did do was add a cabinet over the fridge.I love the look of the built in fridge, love it love it love it. BUT I'm not sure how to best achieve it in my kitchen. So my question is: how do I "box-in" my fridge, and do I really need to (keep in mind it will be stainless steel)?
PS. We will be using a filler to hide the gap between the top of the fridge and the wall cabinet above it.
PSS. I just found out that filler pieces for Rubrik white/aluminium are Abstrakt high gloss white, which mean that I might as well get it all in high gloss white to match perfectly. Decisions, decisions, decisions

I really like the upper cabinet, it makes the fridge feel "included". Nice touch! I was going to ask - do you plan on using Ikea counters? I did (with the oak) and I have a couple regrets - first, oak isn't food safe as the grain is too open. The second is how it installed - the way the counters come together in the corner leaves a lot to be desired. Because we had to use a really long piece, we had to butt two pieces of counter together (at the corner, the standard place) - but Ikea finishes all edges with a bevel. The result is not a flat transition but a bevelled transition, so annoying. It gets so much crap in it!!!
ReplyDeleteAll that to say, apparently there is a custom hardwood counter producer on the quebec side that is amazing (and affordable?), I'll try to hunt down the details next week!
PS. I love how the wall is built out half way in the picture to create a fitted in space for the fridge. I think that's much better than the standard particle board piece to close it in. It's actually idea for a number of reasons, a primary being that you will have a prime location on the side to display 'art' made by your little one. Lots of stainless steel fridges aren't magnetic (I'm not sure if this is important to you).
ReplyDeleteGinger, have I mentioned that I"m your #1 fan?? You have the best comments and ideas. Thank you so much for sharing. I would love the contact info for the butcherblock supplier in QC!
ReplyDeleteFlattery will get you everywhere, my friend! ;)
ReplyDeleteI am assuming ginger is talking about Bizier. They are just outside of Wakefield--just before Jean Burger. We used them for our counter tops at our cottage. They also do wood for flooring. They were great and really reasonable. They have a large selection of wood, finishes, and thicknesses available to select from.
