| SOURCE This is a kitchen I'm dying over right now. Those rustic open shelves are to die for. |
Sorry, this picture has nothing to do with the post. But I love this kitchen. Can you tell I'm already scheming for my way-down-the-road kitchen plan?? Ha. We'll get to that...
Part of the stress of selling/moving/downsizing for us is not really being sure of where we would end up next. While normal people would buy a place before selling their own, we have done the unthinkable and put the house up for sale with no clue as to when and how and where we would go after everything is sold/said and done. And it really doesn’t help that the clock is a-ticking, new-baby-wise. It has been hard to say the least. Not that I am complaining, just keeping it real.
The timing of our sell/move decision came down to what the real estate market is like right now. And, in my understanding, the market is in limbo. No one knows for sure what to expect. Is the bubble about to burst? What about all the lay-offs in the city? What about future lay-offs? What about US real estate situation, will we mimic it? Are we due for a crash, a slow down? Tell me tell me tell me!
My gut is telling me that right now is the time to sell our house in our neighbourhood. Unlike other neighbourhoods, we have about 60% original home owners still in their homes. Which means they’ve had them for 25+ years and have either retired or are about to retire. Which says to me that THEY will want to downsize soon-ish too. Maybe not all of them, but at least a good portion of them. And I’m not keen on competing with them. In our area there has always been a short supply of homes for sale, coupled with high demand it has been a great place to make some cash. And I was worried that a few years down the road this trend might be reversed not in my favour.

So the house got finished up and went on the market.
As to what will we do next? So far, as I’ve briefly mentioned, we are looking to stay in the same area and rent a 2bedroom + den apartment. It won’t be big, but it will be close to grandma, close to the park, shopping and won’t overwhelm me with housework. We hope that this will work for us while I am on mat leave with new baby, plus while I’m simultaneously trying to wrap up my Masters research and class work.
In the meantime, we search the city for where to go next.

WOW, you have a lot on your plate. You're a better woman than me.
ReplyDeleteI've already picked out our new house and redesigned its kitchen. Never mind that it's at least a few months before we list ours.
Raina, I have my eye of a few places. I stay up nights redesigning them :) I think its a sickness! Unfortunately, what I want is not being built right now, the project is on hold with the city :( But I remain hopeful that we'll be buying something not too too far in the future.
DeletePS. are you going to post the original plans and your redesign? I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see that!
DeleteThank you for your response on my question before as to why you are selling. Our issue is more about too much space in other areas VS not enough space in living area and kitchen.
ReplyDeleteI totally think that you are right to sell first and only THEN find what you really love. Too many people buy first, and then get pressured by the closing date on the new place and reduce the price of their original house.
Are you looking in same area but smaller home? We live in Westboro and love the feel of the homes and neighbourhood.
